Jim Tomey

Adding a local flavor to the San Diego State basketball staff is Jim Tomey. He was named as Steve Fisher?s third assistant coach in August 1999. Tomey assists in all facets of the program, including coaching, on-campus recruiting, as well as administering summer camps.

A state legend for his successful run as the head coach at the University of San Diego High School, Tomey will be inducted into the San Diego Hall of Champions Coaching Legends this fall on Nov. 7.

Tomey ran the Southern California prep program for 10 years as the head coach at University of San Diego High School. He is one of the most successful prep coaches in San Diego County history. His decade as coach of the Dons resulted in 210 victories, a state title (1998), four trips to the final four, seven CIF section championships and four undefeated conference seasons. Seven of his teams won at least 20 games.

Tomey is a popular speaker at clinics and camps all over the west, including the Nike Camp, Michael Jordan Flight School, Magic Johnson and Byron Scott camps.

Before being elevated to head coach, Tomey spent three years as a USDHS assistant coach and one year as the junior varsity coach at Clairemont High School.

A native of Detroit, Tomey played basketball at Eastern Michigan University. He finished work on his degree at the University of Michigan, earning a bachelor?s degree in education in 1981. He later completed work on his master?s in education at Azusa Pacific.

Tomey plays an active role in the Aztec program, helping to design and implement practice plans,. He is also is active on the court during practice, instructing players in both offensive and defensive sets.

Tomey and his wife of 19 years, Annemieke, have three daughters: Lauren (10), Madeliene (8) and Suzanna (6). They reside in Scripps Ranch.
