Hector Alvarez

TitleWomen's Lightweight Rowing Assistant Coach
Hector Alvarez

San Diego State Head Rowing Coach Jennifer Lewis has announced the hiring of Hector Alvarez as an assistant coach for the Aztec crew program. He brings experience both as an athlete and coach to his new position at SDSU.

Alvarez, who was a member of the San Diego State men[apos]s crew club team from 2001-05, has served as a rowing instructor at the Mission Bay Aquatic Center since 2004. He has taught beginning, intermediate and advanced sweep/sculling classes which focus on technique and body positioning.

He served as an assistant with the SDSU men[apos]s club team during the 2005-06 academic year, working with the Novice Four boats, supervising land and erg workouts.

As a rowing instructor with the Mission Bay Rowing Association, Alvarez has coached both eight- and four-man boats. Last fall he served as a volunteer coach with the Aztec crew team.

[quote]Hector is a welcomed addition to the coaching staff,[quote] commented Lewis. [quote]Since he was the volunteer coach for us this past fall he will transition easily into the new role. He will be primarily coaching the novice athletes this spring and I know he[apos]ll bring a sense of enthusiasm and passion to the squad. It[apos]s great to have him on board and I[apos]m looking forward to a successful spring season.[quote]

Alvarez, who graduated from San Diego State in 2005 with a bachelor of arts degree in sociology with a minor in Spanish, has completed both the first and second levels of the U.S. Rowing Coaching Education program and is eager to begin his new assignment.

[quote]I[apos]m excited to have been selected to be part of the Aztec team,[quote] said Alvarez. [quote]Having been a volunteer coach in the fall, I got a snap shot of how (coaches) Jen (Lewis) and Ali (Abrams) lead the team. I[apos]m looking forward to assisting and learning from both of them. As an SDSU alum, I[apos]m proud to once again be part of what the Aztec Shield symbolizes: honor, pride, and accomplishment.[quote]
