David Lose

David Lose (pronounced LOW-say) joined Sean Lewis’ coaching staff on March 1, 2024 as the Aztecs’ defensive line coach.
 
He comes to The Mesa after two seasons at the University of Idaho. With the Vandals, he helped improve the defensive scoring from 31.55 points allowed per game in 2021 to 22.08 points allowed per game in 2023, which ranked 28th in FCS. The Idaho defense ranked 21st in FCS in passing yards allowed (182.2 ypg, 1st in Big Sky) and 31st in FCS in rushing yards allowed (124.7, 4th in Big Sky). Their 306.8 total defense was 14th best in all of FCS.

Idaho would reach the 2023 FCS Quarterfinal game against UAlbany and two of Lose’s defensive linemen would receive All-Big Sky recognition.
 
Prior to Idaho, he spent three seasons as a defensive quality control analyst at his alma mater, Oregon State. While on staff, he helped the Beavers make it to the 2021 LA Bowl against Utah State.
 
Lose spent the 2017 and 2018 seasons as the defensive line coach. There, he guided Kenton Bartlett to all-Big Sky honors in 2018.
 
Before Portland State, he coach six seasons as a defensive assistant at Washington State after starting his collegiate coaching career at Saint Paul’s College in Virginia from 2009-10.
 
His coaching career began at the high school level, coaching at his alma mater, Luther Burbank High School in Sacramento from 2006-08.
 
Lose played at Oregon Sate in the early 2000s, starting in 18 games. He was part of the Beavers’ co-PAC-12 title Fiesta Bowl championship team and was a key blocker for Beaver running back greats Ken Simonton and Steven Jackson, and record-setting and NFL veteran quarterback Derek Anderson.
 
He earned his bachelor’s degree from Oregon State in 2004 and his master’s degree in sport management from Washington State in 2014.
