Coaching Experience

-A 30-year veteran in the college football coaching ranks, he was Chuck Long[apos]s first hire at San Diego State. Serves as assistant head coach and defensive coordinator and added coaching duties with the inside linebackers in 2008.

-Has served as a defensive coordinator for 10 seasons, including one year at Ball State, three years at Iowa, four with Kansas State and the last two years at San Diego State.

-The Aztecs have boasted the top tackler in Mountain West Conference games in each of Elliott[apos]s campaigns. Joe Martin averaged 10.0 stops in 2006, while Russell Allen ranked No. 1 with 10.6 tackles per game a year ago.

-In his first season at San Diego State, the Aztecs were second in the MWC in pass defense (171.0 yards per game) and second in red zone defense (67.3 percent).

-Had a four-year run at Kansas State in which the Wildcats posted two 11-win seasons, claimed the school[apos]s lone Big 12 championship and advanced to the 2003 Fiesta Bowl, the only appearance in a BCS Bowl game in school history.

-During his tenure, K-State went 31-19 (62.0 winning percentage) with four victories over nationally ranked teams.

-His 2002 Wildcat defensive unit finished the season ranked first in scoring defense, second in total defense, second in rushing defense and third in passing efficiency defense.

-The 2003 Wildcats were sixth nationally in total defense, eighth in scoring defense, 12th in pass efficiency defense and 17th in rushing defense.

-Elliott helped lead Iowa St. to consecutive bowl games in 2000 and 2001 as an associate head coach, secondary and special teams coordinator.

-From 1987 to 1998, he was Iowa[apos]s secondary coach and then the Hawkeyes[apos] assistant head coach and defensive coordinator, guiding the program to an 82-56-2 record (59.3 percent), and nine .500 or better campaigns in 11 seasons.

-In 1996 and 1997, Elliott[apos]s Iowa defensive unit ranked among the top 10 nationally in several statistical categories.

-During his stay, Iowa participated in the Rose Bowl, two Holiday Bowls, two Alamo Bowls, two Sun Bowls and the Peach Bowl.

-From 1983 to 1987, he served as wide receivers and tight ends coach at North Carolina, before returning to his alma mater in 1987.

-Was a graduate assistant coach at Iowa in 1976, before getting his first full-time position as a secondary coach at Kent State in 1977.

-Served as defensive coordinator and secondary coach at Ball State from 1978 to 1981, before going to Iowa State in 1981 as a secondary coach.

-Also worked in several other positions at Iowa, including assistant athletic director (1998-2000), adjunct professor in the college of business and Executive Director of the Iowa Alumni Association (1995).
