Entering 2020-21 Season
Nick Grant will be entering his seventh season as an assistant coach for the Aztec women’s basketball team. He serves as SDSU’s recruiting coordinator and primarily works with the Aztec guards while also coaching the defensive side of the ball.
Since Grant began serving on SDSU’s coaching staff, he has helped at least one of his position players collect all-Mountain West honors each season, most recently Sophia Ramos and Taylor Kalmer.
This past season, the Aztecs tied for fifth in the Mountain West while holding opponents to 38.6 percent shooting from the field, both were team-bests since the 2013 season. SDSU also shot 35.8 percent from three, the second-best percentage in school history.
The 2018-19 the Aztecs won 14 games and advanced to the semifinals of the Mountain West Tournament. Both were season-bests for SDSU under head coach Stacie Terry-Hutson. They knocked off the No. 2 seed New Mexico in the quarterfinals and pushed the No. 3 seed, Wyoming to overtime in the semifinals.
As recruiting coordinator, Grant helped bring in top-75 recruiting classes in 2017 and 2018 after SDSU hadn’t had one since 2010-11. The 2017 class was ranked No. 21 nationally.
The 2018 class was led by a pair of freshmen from Texas, who made huge contributions in their debut season. Point guard Sophia Ramos became the first Aztec to lead the team in scoring and assists since 2007 and her totals for points and assists were the most by a SDSU freshman since 1992. Her sidekick, Mallory Adams was an honorable mention selection to the all-Mountain West team and had the most rebounds by an Aztec since 2000 and the most for a freshman since 1984.
The 2020 class is highlighted by Asia Avinger, the highest-ranked recruit SDSU has landed under Terry-Hutson.
Grant helped McKynzie (2014-18) Fort climb the scoring charts to become the Aztecs’ third-leading scorer (1,708 points) in school history. Fort was a four-time all-Mountain West honoree and was named to the conference’s all-defensive team twice.
Grant, an Arlington, Texas, native arrived on Montezuma Mesa after spending three seasons at Texas A&M, including the final two as video coordinator.
During his tenure with the Aggies, Grant was part of a program that made three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, highlighted by a run to the Elite Eight in 2014. In addition to the recording, breakdown, and analysis of all practices and games, Grant’s responsibilities included serving as a liaison between the players and coaching staff.
Prior to his appointment as video coordinator, Grant served as a strength and conditioning intern with the Texas A&M athletic department for the 2011-12 season, working full-time with the women’s basketball team. He also aided the Aggies’ recruiting efforts in the summer of 2012, evaluating women’s basketball talent at the AAU level.
Grant received his Bachelor of Arts degree in communication from Baylor in 2010. While on the Waco campus, he served as a team manager with the women’s basketball squad from 2006-08, assisting with guards on fundamentals and skill work. During those two seasons, the Lady Bears amassed 53 victories and twice reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Upon graduation, Grant remained at Baylor, working with seven scholarship programs in the weight room as an athletic performance intern during the 2010-11 campaign.
Grant married Danyelle Grant in the summer of 2020.
