Entering 2021 season
Mia Longfellow recently completed her 11th season as an assistant coach at San Diego State in 2020.
Longfellow primarily works with the infielders and assists with all aspects of recruiting. In addition, Longfellow is the travel coordinator and is the head person for alumni affairs. She used to work with the outfielders.
In her 11 seasons as an assistant coach, the Aztecs have gone 337-228 (.597) and made the NCAA tournament six times.
In a season shortened in 2020 due to the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19), shortstop Shelby Thompson lead the Aztecs in runs (21), triples (3), home runs (4), RBIs (15, tied), walks (14), times hit by pitch (7), slugging percentage (.519) and on-base percentage (.417) in just 28 games.
In 2019, Thompson earned first-team all-Mountain West honors for a third straight season after batting .403 in league play and .336 overall. First baseman?Taylor?Adams (.327) also hit over .300 en route to earning second-team all-MW honors.
In 2018, Thompson earned first-team all-Mountain West honors for a second straight season after batting .347 in league play with five homers, 15 RBIs, 20 runs and five stolen bases in 24 games.
In 2017, SDSU led the country with a .356 average, shattering their previous best of .310. In all, San Diego State set seven school records, including batting average, on-base percentage (.418), slugging percentage (.516), hits (497), RBIs (295), sacrifice flies (23) and runs (324, tied).
Longfellow helped all four infielders earn all-MW accolades in 2017, and three make the all-NFCA West Region team. Sydnee Cable, Molly Sturdivant and Thompson, who was also the MW Freshman of the Year, were named the the all-league first team, while Katie Byrd earned second-team all-MW accolades. Byrd and Sturdivant also earned second-team all-NFCA West Region accolades, while Cable was a third-team selection.
Byrd batted .361 with three home runs, 35 RBIs, 42 runs, 16 doubles, a .519 slugging percentage and a .428 on-base percentage, Thompson hit .333 with seven home runs, 31 RBIs, 26 runs, five doubles, two triples, 20 walks and six stolen bases, while posting a .556 slugging percentage and a .434 on-base percentage, and Cable batted .371 with six homers, 43 RBIs, 23 runs, eight doubles and nine walks.
In 2016, Longfellow helped coach shortstop Samantha Camello, who batted .359 to go along with 13 doubles, two triples, two homers, 25 RBIs, 32 run, 12 walks, five stolen bases, a .486 slugging percentage and a .400 on-base percentage. For her efforts, she was chosen as a first-team all-MW selection and also became the first Aztec softball player ever to be named a CoSIDA Academic All-America pick after earning second-team honors. She was also a CoSIDA Academic All-District 8 first-team pick, posting a 3.98 cumulative GPA.
In 2015, Longfellow helped San Diego State set seven school records, including batting average (.310), slugging percentage (.486), runs (324), home runs (63), RBIs (293), total bases (758) and hits (484). The Aztecs went onto to finish 38-20, including an 18-6 mark in MW play, and making a NCAA Regional final for the third time in five seasons.
In 2014, Longfellow helped San Diego State set seven school records, including batting average (.301), on-base percentage (.397), runs (301), hits (467), RBIs (270), walks (226) and times hit by pitch (30). The Aztecs went onto to finish 40-19, winning their third straight MW championship at 16-8.
Longfellow helped Patrice Jackson earn first-team all-NFCA West Region honors after batting .338 with 17 home runs and 49 RBIs, while setting school records in on-base percentage (.523), RBIs (49, tied) and walks (59). Jaylene Ignacio (.322, 5 HR, 17 RBI) and Jackson (.339, 5 HR, 16 RBI) also earned all-MW first-team honors (stats are for league games only) in the first year that the league had a first and second team, while Dominique Dinner (.391, 1 HR, 15 RBI) was a second-team selection. All three athletes played in the outfield (Dinner played in the outfield and at catcher).
In 2013, Longfellow helped SDSU finish 36-20, including a 13-5 mark in the Mountain West en route to the team's second straight league title.
Longfellow helped coach Jackson to numerous honors. Jackson, who batted .366 with a team-high 18 home runs and 48 RBIs, was a second-team Easton All-American, a first-team all-NFCA West Region selection, the MW Player of the Year and an all-league pick.
In 2012, Longfellow helped the Aztecs to a 32-24 record, including a 9-3 mark in the Mountain West en route to the league title.
Longfellow helped coach two outfielders to all-conference honors, including Kayla Jordan and Jackson. Jordan batted .324 with 14 RBIs and 12 stolen bases en route to being named the Mountain West Freshman of the Year, while Jackson hit .311 with 11 home runs and 39 RBIs.
In 2011, San Diego State was 34-21 before falling to eventual national champion Arizona State in the Tempe Regional final.
Longfellow helped two outfielders earn all-league accolades. Hayley Miles was named the MW Freshman of the Year after hitting .344 with five home runs and 29 RBIs. Jessica Camello joined Miles on the all-conference team after batting .321.
In her first season as an assistant coach in 2010, Longfellow helped the Aztecs to another NCAA tournament appearance after improving their record from 33-20 (.623) to 34-16 (.680).
Longfellow helped coach senior Brittany Knudsen earn NFCA All-Far West Region honors and all-MWC accolades last year after batting .384 with three home runs and 27 RBIs. Sophomore Felicia Reifschneider, meanwhile, hit .268 with 35 runs and 14 stolen bases.
Longfellow, who was hired on Aug. 19, 2009, was a four-time all-Pac-10 selection at Oregon State.
"We are extremely excited to be adding Mia to this staff," Van Wyk said of the hiring. "She brings in six years of playing and coaching experience at Oregon State and UC Riverside under excellent staffs. Mia will give more individual attention to our outfielders while helping (assistant coach) Stacey (Nuvemen Deniz) with the offense as well."
Longfellow came to The Mesa after spending 2009 as an assistant coach at UC Riverside, where she worked predominantly with the infielders. In her one season with the Highlanders, Longfellow helped UCR improve in winning percentage (both overall and in the Big West Conference), triples, sacrifice bunts and fielding percentage.
Prior to UC Riverside, Longfellow spent one season as an undergraduate assistant coach at Oregon State, where she shined as a player for four years from 2004-07. Longfellow led the Beavers to four consecutive NCAA appearances, including a berth in the 2006 Women's College World Series.
Longfellow, who played shortstop, third base and left field while at OSU, earned all-Pac-10 conference accolades all four seasons, including second-team honors each of her final three years. Over her four seasons at Oregon State, Longfellow broke five program records, including four career marks - at-bats (775), hits (242), singles (192) and stolen bases (57) - and one single-season mark - stolen bases (18 in 2005). Overall, Longfellow's name appears 26 times in the Beaver record book with single-game tying bests in hits (four), runs (four) and home runs (two).
Longfellow graduated from OSU in 2007 with a double major in education and human development family science. She also played professionally for the ProFastpitch X-Treme Tour (PFX).
Longfellow married Ryan Ferguson in December 2015 and the couple has two daughters, Jena, and, Ryleigh.
