SAN DIEGO - San Diego State director of athletics Mike Bohn has announced the hiring of Steve Becvar as the University's new senior associate athletic director. Becvar, who will assume his duties on Monday, has most recently served as director of sponsorship and corporate sales for the Memphis Grizzlies.

"Steve will provide an immediate impact to our management team," Bohn said. "His experience and expertise will complement the strengths of the existing external staff. He brings proven ability, at the both the college and professional levels, to stimulate corporate partnership and revenue enhancement."

The move to San Diego State will be a return to the Mountain West Conference for Becvar. From 1985 to 2000 he was an administrator at the United States Air Force Academy, where his last title was associate athletic director for development. His accomplishments at the Academy included raising over $1 million for a new football scoreboard and the development of an in-house radio network. He is also the former executive director of the Blue & Silver Club. During his stay in Colorado Springs, Becvar also worked in the ticket office, as well as marketing and promotions.

"I am excited to have this opportunity at San Diego State University," Becvar said. "I look forward to working with current staff members to further develop relationships and partners committed to realizing the potential of Aztec athletics. My family and I are thrilled to become part of the San Diego community."

Becvar left Air Force to become Vice President for Sales and Marketing for the Memphis Maniax of the XFL. That franchise ranked second in league attendance. He joined the Grizzlies in 2001 and has helped the NBA franchise generate more than $10 million in corporate support since relocating from Vancouver.

Becvar is a native of Maryland. He earned undergraduate and graduate degrees from Ohio University, where he played baseball and basketball. He and his wife, Jo, have three children.
