Dietz To Return For 30th Season

SAN DIEGO - San Diego State University Executive Director of Athletics Rick Bay announced today that baseball coach Jim Dietz has signed a one-year contract and will return for his 30th year at the University.

"The new contract includes some very high performance standards and expectations that reflect what I believe our program can achieve ," Bay said. "Jim has accepted the challenge to elevate San Diego State baseball to a higher level."

"I am happy to be back," Dietz said. "We are excited about the conclusion of the 2000 season and we are anxious to build upon that championship."

Dietz, in 29 years at SDSU, has a career record of 1,154-701-18 (.621). His teams have claimed five division titles, two regular-season conference titles and three tournament championships. The Aztecs have advanced to eight NCAA Tournaments under Dietz, with the most recent coming in 1991. He has suffered three losing seasons in his career.

The 2000 Aztecs finished the season with a 34-28 record, including an undefeated run to the Mountain West Conference tournament title in May. SDSU finished second to New Mexico in the regular-season race.

Dietz, 61, has never signed a contract longer than one year in length during his stay with SDSU.
