SAN DIEGO - Volunteers for the Aztec Athletic Foundation gathered for the final time on Tuesday, June 5th, at Tony Gwynn Stadium for a final push to reach its goal of raising $1 million in unrestricted funds for student-athlete scholarships at San Diego State.

At the close of the meeting, volunteers had confirmed pledges of $960,749.97, shattering last year's record mark of $787,000 by 22 percent.

"This is a great honor for us, to come within an eyelash of reaching our $1 million goal, which we knew was very aggressive," said The Drive 2001 Chairman Craig Nelson. "We revamped a number of areas associated with our annual campaign, and I think the results speak for themselves."

Nelson went on to add that he expects to reach the $1 million plateau very shortly, an expression echoed by AAF Director Pat Kreger.

"We are within $40,000 of our goal, and we have a number of renewals still outstanding, many of which are tied to priority seating at Cox Arena for Aztec men's basketball. We have only recently kicked off our renewal campaign for the upcoming 2001-2002 season, and our response has been overwhelming, so we fully expect these current non-renewals to be confirmed by the end of the ticket renewal phase. And, we have not begun our campaign for new season tickets to men's basketball. We expect to push our numbers even higher. And we have a volunteer base that will continue to work to reach our goal, and it's safe to say we expect to announce reaching the $1 million level in short order."

The deadline for renewing season tickets for the 2001-2002 men's basketball season is June 15th.
