Aztecs Spend Day In Orange County

SAN DIEGO - Approximately 100 supporters of San Diego State University gathered atTustin Ranch Golf Club in Tustin on Monday, June 4th, to celebrate theinaugural "Aztecs in Orange County Day", co-sponsored by the AztecAthletic Foundation and the SDSU Alumni Association.

Attendees were treated to a day of golf on the highly-touted Tustin Ranchtrack, and finished the evening hearing about the latest in AztecAthletics from three of the most prominent people representing SDSU:Executive Director of Athletics Rick Bay, Head Football Coach Ted Tollner,and Head Men's Basketball Coach Steve Fisher.

Bay gave the group an update on a number of issues surrounding AztecAthletics, including the new Aztec Athletic Center. Tollnerrecapped the recent spring practice season, and gave a preview of whathe expects from the Aztecs this season.

Fisher updated the group on the improvement of the men's basketball team,and talked about the new players added to the solid core of returningplayers for next season. The night ended with all three men fieldingquestions from the crowd on a wide variety of topics associated with AztecAthletics.

In the golf tournament, the team of Ken Purcell, Mike Jara, Bob Hoyt, Jr.,and David Quisling gathered top honors, and each took home the opportunityto receive two season tickets for either Aztec football or men'sbasketball.

Henry Schwendimann took home the prize for longest drive, while ChrisDickie hit the shot of the day for "closest to the pin" honors. Eachreceived a certificate enabling them to receive two single-game tickets toany Aztec football or men's basketball home contest of their choosing.

"I was thrilled with the event," said SDSU Alumni Association OrangeCounty Chapter President Todd Schaus. "It was a great event for our groupto be involved with in our area. We can't thank the athletic departmentenough for their support and involvement for making this day happen."

"Everybody here had a wonderful time, and having such visible guests fromthe department really capped off the day," said AAF Orange CountyCaptain Bob Scurrah. "It was a tremendous way to cap off our activitiesassociated with The Drive 2001 in Orange County. This will definitelyserve as a springboard for future activities in the area, as we increaseour presence in Orange County."
