Aztecs Named GTE Academic All-American District VIII

SAN DIEGO -

San Diego State's Meredith Johnson of the women's crew program and Mike Koch of the men's volleyball program were selected to the 2000 GTE Academic All-American First-Team District VIII.

The team is selected by voting members of the Collegiate Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Each student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average, must be a starter or an important reserve and be in at least their second season at their current school.

Johnson is a graduate student at San Diego State earning her master's degree in kinesiology and has maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout her studies. She is a recipient of numerous accolades, including a three-time Jim Malik Scholar-Athlete award winner, which is presented to the student-athlete who has attained the highest GPA in each semester. Johnson also is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi and the Golden Key National Honor Society. She was graduated SDSU as magna cum laude. Johnson is the captain of the women's crew program and won the Collegiate Lightweight Division at the San Diego and Long Beach Indoor Rowing Championship in 1998.

Koch is completing his undergraduate studies at San Diego State and will graduate with a degree in biology/medical sciences with a 3.87 GPA. An Aztec scholar athlete, he is a six-time Jim Malik award recipient. He is a member of the Golden Key National Honor Society and a member of Phi Betta Kappa. A fifth-year senior on the men's volleyball squad he finished as the season-leader in digs 143 digs (2.07 dpg) and at .308.
