The Drive 2001 Total Climbs To $796,377.47 May 23, 2001 SAN DIEGO - Volunteers for the Aztec Athletic Foundation gathered at Qualcomm Stadiumon Thursday, May 17th to track progress on The Drive 2001 at Report Night III. The total amount of pledges received as of 5/17/01 was $796,377.47. TheAAF has set a goal of raising $1 million in unrestricted donations duringits seven-week annual campaign, which is set to conclude on Thursday, May24th at Cox Arena. "We've surpassed our total from last year at this point, but we've got ahard final push in the last week to put us over $1 million. We need all ofSDSU to get behind us now, and help us reach our goal, which has atremendous impact and influence on our student-athletes immediately," saidThe Drive 2001 Chairman Craig Nelson. "It's crunch time!" "To pass our total from last year in five weeks says a lot about ourvolunteers," said AAF President Ben Bagnas. "We have a great group ofpeople who care greatly about SDSU Athletics, and put their reputation andtime on the line to help out in something they believe in deeply. It's myvision to see this campaign increase to 300 volunteers in the near future,which I feel will allow us to reach our maximum potential and influence." "We've got one week left to put us over the top," said AAF Director PatKreger. "It's going to be a hard push to get us to $1 million." In the team race, the Scripps Ranch/Poway team still leads at 114.8 percent oftheir 2000 totals, for a team total of $67,565. The Beach Bums, powered bythree of the Top 10 individuals, still follow in second at 103.4 percent and a teamtotal of $98,222. In the individual race, AAF President and Scripps Ranch/Poway team captainBen Bagnas continues his wire-to-wire lead with $46,695, 147 percent of his 2000total. However, Jim and Deborah Marshall, team co-captains of The BeachBums, have steadily closed the gap, and are alone in second at $41,907,133 percent of their 2000 total. Bagnas ended the evening by challenging everyone to finish strong duringthe last week, and also challenged someone to knock him out of first place,which he has held since the beginning of The Drive, saying, "I want to winthis wire-to-wire!"
