San Diego, CA -

San Diego State University Director of Athletics Rick Bay today announced that the Aztec Athletic Foundation is putting the finishing touches on what already is a record-setting fund drive. Spearheaded by a five-week phone campaign that concluded last month, volunteer AAF members raised $1,010,467 in donations for scholarships for SDSU student-athletes, surpassing the previous best of $672,083 raised in 1998.

"We're extremely grateful for the generosity of our many donors, the devoted work of our AAF staff, and more importantly, the tireless efforts of our volunteer fund drive workers to make this goal a reality," said Fund Drive chairman, Fred Lear.

Lear cited the general positive feelings in the community following last year's appearance by the SDSU football team in the Las Vegas Bowl, plus new efforts to secure donations among University alums in the San Francisco, Sacramento and Orange County areas among the reasons for the increase.

The fund drive officially concludes on June 30, 1999. All funds raised during this campaign benefit nearly 500 San Diego State student-athletes from the total of 18 men's and women's varsity sports.
