Aztec Scholar Athletes Honored at Wednesday Banquet

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State University Department of Athletics honored 153 student athletes Wednesday night at its 10th annual Scholar-Athlete Awards Program held in the Aztec Athletics Center.

The honorees all attained a grade-point average of at least 3.2 during the 2003 calendar year (2003 spring and fall semesters).

Twelve individuals were honored as Malik Award winners. Named in honor of the University's Professor Emeritus in chemistry and long-time Faculty Athletic Representative, the Malik Award winners achieved the highest grade-point averages among male and female student athletes in 2003. Those award winners included Kylie Edwards (cross country/track), Rielly Embrey (baseball), Jessica Huettl (women's basketball), Katja Karrento (women's tennis), David McClaskey (student trainer), Marie Nilsson (cross country/track), Ashley Paiko (crew), Brook Patton (student trainer), Armin Shaverdian (student trainer), Paul Szefler (men's soccer), Kyle Ulrich (student trainer) and Trevor Winton (student trainer).

The academic honors include the Big Red Award (3.2 or better grade-point average), the Monty Award (3.5 and above), and the Malik Award.

Following the honors banquet in the Aztec Hall of Fame, the honorees headed downtown for the Padres-Expos baseball game at PETCO Park.

Nearly 1,400 student-athletes have been honored at the Scholar-Athlete Awards Program since its inception. Over the last 10 years, 272 freshmen student-athletes have enrolled at San Diego State and 216 of them have completed work on their undergraduate degrees.
