The Drive 2004 Reaches $ 295,462 After First Report Night

SAN DIEGO -- Volunteers from throughout San Diego County gathered at the Aztec Athletics Center for their first Report Night No. 1 of the 2004 fund drive.

At the first checkpoint of the 10-week campaign, volunteer fundraisers have secured $295,462 toward their goal of $1.25 million for student-athlete scholarships at San Diego State University.

Volunteers were treated with talks from two SDSU student-athletes, Kirk Morrison of the Aztec football team and Tonette Dyer of the Aztec track team. Both student-athletes thanked the volunteers and contributors for their support of the student-athlete scholarship fund.

At this point, Cliff Bee has jumped out to an early lead by securing $43,375 in pledges. Todd Nielsen, from the East County Aztechnicians, is in second place with $23,364. Defending top-dollar producer Ben Bagnas reported $22,930, while second-year volunteer John Busch turned in $20,000 for fourth and veteran Sharon Burgreen collected $17,534.

In the team competition, standings are based on the percentage renewed and/or increased from the previous year. Leading the way is the I-15 Aztec Road Warriors, led by Ben Bagnas and John Busch with 38 percent renewed. The Beach Bum Border reported a 37 percent secured, led by individual leader Cliff Bee while the East County Aztechnicians, led by top-five producers Todd Nielsen and Sharon Burgreen, are in third with 33 percent secured.
