The Drive 2001 At $337,041.65 After First Report Night April 20, 2001 SAN DIEGO - The Aztec Athletic Foundation hosted Report Night #1 on Thursday, April 19th on the SDSU campus, to track progress on its march to raise $1 million in unrestricted funds during The Drive 2001. The total amount of pledges committed as of April 19th is $337,041.65. Report Night #1 serves as the first checkpoint of the AAF's seven-week annual campaign. Volunteers were also treated to a special guest speaker, as Ed Graney, writer for the Union Tribune and West Coast contributor to ESPN.com, re-capped the recent Aztec men's basketball recruits, spring football practice, and gave a preview of what to expect from the Aztecs on the gridiron and the hardwood in 2001-02. "We're ecstatic to be one-third to our goal one-quarter the way through the campaign," said AAF Director Pat Kreger. "We're definitely off to a great start, and we have a large quantity of contacts to make, so we feel optimistic about meeting our $1 million challenge. However, we've got a lot of work to do, so our volunteers are digging their feet in, and getting San Diego County squarely behind the Aztecs." "I'm very pleased," remarked Craig Nelson, Chairman of The Drive 2001. "This is a great start for us. There's a lot of positive things happening with Aztec Athletics, which includes the on-campus facility transformation, a spectacular recruiting class for men's basketball to join a solid returning nucleus, and an experienced, physical, athletic football team ready to take on Arizona from the PAC-10 on August 30th. "There's no better time to be a part of the Aztecs, and the AAF is the engine that drives the department. This is only the beginning, we have five weeks left to reach $1 million, and we are going to get there. There's a lot of work to be done, and a lot of contacts to make, but we will make them. I urge all of San Diego to get on board now!" In the team race, The Beach Bums lead with $49,092 in pledges, followed closely by the Scripps Ranch/Poway team at $46,400. In the individual race, current AAF President Ben Bagnas continues to be the front runner, with $37,120 in pledges. Long-time AAF volunteer Bobbie Harkey is in second at $27,004.
