April 6, 1999
SAN DIEGO - San Diego State Director of Athletics Rick Bay today announced the names of 133 Aztec student-athletes who will be honored at the Sixth Annual SDSU Scholar-Athlete Banquet this Thursday, April 8 at Sea World. The banquet, sponsored by the Aztec Athletic Foundation, begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Garden Plaza. SDSU athletes who earned a 3.20 grade point average or better during the 1998 calendar year will be recognized as a Monty Award winner (3.50 or higher gpa) or Big Red Award winner (3.20 to 3.49 gpa). Male and female athletes who earned the highest gpa's in the spring and fall semesters in 1998 will receive the Jim Malik Award, named for the long-time SDSU NCAA Faculty-Athletics Representative who is now retired.
The 133 student-athletes to be recognized Thursday night represent the most Aztecs to be honored in the banquet's six years. The figure includes slightly more than 30% of the 435 students on San Diego State varsity athletic rosters in 1998. That compares to the 26% of the general SDSU student population that attained a 3.20 gpa during at least one semester. The 133 honorees more than triples the 43 athletes awarded at the first scholar-athlete banquet in 1994. The number of qualifying student-athletes has increased each year. Last year, 101 SDSU athletes earned recognition for their 1997 academic excellence.
"The Scholar-Athlete Banquet recognizes excellence off the playing field as a well-rounded student at San Diego State University," says Bay. "The fact that our number of qualified athletes has steadily and dramatically increased each year is a credit to the coaches, our academic counseling office, our staff and, most of all, to these students."
Among those who will be honored on Thursday night is Aztec football safety Scott Auerbach. The Loomis, California senior, who averaged a 4.00 in the spring of 1998, will be formally presented with his GTE first-team Academic All-American award as well as his NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship and Monty Awards. Auerbach was recently accepted into the UC-San Diego School of Medicine.
