Demand Exceeds Capacity For 2001 NCAA Basketball Tourney at SDSU's Cox Arena

San Diego - Just four days since initially accepting ticket applications from the general public for the 2001 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament First/Second Round at SDSU's Cox Arena, San Diego State Director of Athletics Rick Bay today announced that applications submitted now exceed seats available at the site. Following priority seating assignment for Aztec season ticket holders and donors who have turned in applications for the tournament, there will be a lottery conducted for remaining available seating locations in Cox Arena. Thus, the Aztec ticket office will continue to accept applications for inclusion in the lottery.

"We're very proud of the fact that San Diego has stepped up and responded to this event," said Bay. "It goes a long way to dispel the notion that this is not a basketball community."

Thus far, San Diego is the only one of the eight first/second round sites for the 2001 tourney to report a full capacity ticket status to the NCAA.

"We are thrilled with the support that the San Diego community has shown for the NCAA basketball tournament," said Bill Hancock, the tourney's director. "We look forward to coming to San Diego for the 2001 championship first and second round games."

Aztec men's basketball coach Steve Fisher added, "I'm encouraged by this response because I think it's indicative of the fact that the fans here will support a viable, successful, college basketball product. We intend for our team to provide that type of product in the very near future."

The Aztec Ticket Office at Qualcomm Stadium, Gate G will continue to accept applications for the 2001 First/Second Round of the NCAA Basketball Tournament through April 28. A lottery will then be conducted for remaining seats by June 1. The ticket office is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Applications are also available on the SDSU athletic web site at www.goaztecs.com and can be downloaded and faxed to the ticket office at (619) 283-8978.
