Aztecs Reach Agreement To Use City Heights Pool March 1, 2000 San Diego - San Diego State Director of Athletics Rick Bay today announced that an agreement with the City Heights Swim Center has been reached for the Aztec varsity women's swimming team to use the City Heights Community Pool for practices during the 2000-2001 seasons. In addition, the SDSU women's water polo team will conduct its conditioning in City Heights. The squad's in-season practices and home matches will continue to be held at Bud Kearns Pool in Balboa Park while a site for the swim team's home contests is still being sought. San Diego State University has an active outreach relationship with the community of City Heights through its numerous academic programs. SDSU President Stephen L. Weber said the agreement to use the City Heights pool makes the bond between the community and the University even stronger. "Our students, faculty and staff are involved in a wide variety of educational and social activities in City Heights," Weber said. "To have our student-athletes in the area on a regular basis can only serve to further develop the wonderful relationship we have with the schools and community members." The move was necessitated by the fact that Terry Pool on the SDSU campus will soon be demolished as part of construction of the new Aztec Athletic Administration and Hall of Fame building. Work on the site is scheduled to begin in June of this year. "We are continuing to explore funding sources for a state-of-the-art, on-campus, varsity aquatics facility," said Bay. "However, in the meantime, our swimming and water polo teams will be able to train in the new pool just down the street from us in City Heights. It really is an impressive complex." |
