LOS ANGELES – Azuna Ichioka of San Diego State women’s tennis competed in the opening day of the ITA West Sectional Championship at USC on Thursday. The Aztec battled in a hard-fought match, but came up short against Washington’s Alexia Jacobs.
Ichioka, a freshman out of Aioi, Japan, entered Thursday’s singles draw with three wins on the season. She faced Jacobs, a senior for Washington who has also tallied three singles victories this fall.
The first set was neck-and-neck, but Jacobs was able to pull away 7-6 (7-4). Ichioka kept it close in the second set as well, but the Husky ultimately claimed a 7-5 win.
Next up, Vessa Turley, Vesa Gjinaj, Teja Tirunelveli and Constanza Fernandez Rincon will compete in the Aztec Fall Invitational, hosted at the Aztec Tennis Center beginning at 9 a.m. PT on Friday.
