SAN DIEGO – The San Diego State men’s soccer team (2-6-5, 0-0-2) earned a 1-1 draw vs. Cal Poly (4-3-5, 0-1-2) to remain undefeated in Pac-12 play.
“Overall, we had a strong 90-minute performance,” Head coach Ryan Hopkins said after the match. “We’ve got to keep stacking these performances in league play and if we keep doing that, we will be right where we want to be at the end.”
The Aztecs struck early, scoring in the third minute when Jaxson Hutcheon finished an assist from Max Mair and Jonah Kawamura.
“I thought it was a world class goal and I’m just so proud of him,” Hopkins said of Hutcheon.
The Mustangs tied the match up in the 23rd minute after a review overturned an offside called. Defender Marlow Buettner sent a long ball from CP’s defensive end that found Finn Linas who was able to loop it over SDSU keeper Nic Diana.
In the 73rd minute, Cal Poly scored again but was once again called for being offside. The Mustangs challenged the ruling, but this time the offside was upheld, and the score remained knotted at one.
Aztec keeper Nic Diana had four saves and Nik Orth attempted four of SDSU’s eight shots, while putting two of them on frame.
