SAN DIEGO -- San Diego State has announced its gameday promotions for Saturday’s Homecoming and Old Oil Can rivalry game against The Team Up North (Fresno State). The San Diego State Alumni association is proudly sponsoring the game as an opportunity for the SDSU community to come back to San Diego and reunite. The game is set to kick off at 7:30 p.m. PT and will be broadcast live on CBS Sports Network while also being broadcast live on the Aztecs Spanish Radio Broadcast HERE!
Saturday’s matchup will be the latest iteration in the battle for The Old Oil Can. The game will mark the 64th meeting between San Diego State and TTUN, with the Aztecs owning a 32-27-4 series lead. This will be the 13th matchup in the Battle of the Oil Can series with San Diego State winning last year’s meeting in Fresno by a score of 23-0.
The game will also serve as a culmination of San Diego State’s Homecoming weekend. Aztec alumni will be able to secure tickets for as little as $30 HERE. The highlight of welcoming back past generations of Aztecs will be the return of the 1966 and 1986 conference championship teams. The 1966 team finished 11-0 and was voted the small college national champions in both the Associated Press (AP) and United Press International (UPI) polls. It was the first time in program history that an Aztec team won every game it played. The 1988 squad, meanwhile, went 8-4 overall and captured its only Western Athletic Conference (WAC) title with a 7-1 record. Both teams will be honored and recognized during the game for their contributions to Aztec Football.
The Aztecs will also recognize the United States Coast Guard in keeping with the programs’ season long acknowledgment of the United States Armed Forces.
The River Block Party, presented by Snapdragon, will open at 2:30 p.m. The block party will feature live music, and various food and beverage options will be available throughout the Block Party while the Kids Zone will offer inflatables, prize wheels, a balloon artist and more!
The Warrior Walk will begin at 5:15 p.m., offering fans the perfect opportunity to cheer on the team as they exit the buses and walk into Snapdragon Stadium where they will gear up to take on the visiting Bulldogs! Fans can mingle with the San Diego State spirit squads, including cheerleaders, dance team and band, before watching the Aztecs get ready to do battle inside the stadium. Aztec Football will be giving away FREE SDSU Aztec beach blankets to the first 1,000 students who arrive at the gates!
SDSU Football is also proud to announce this week’s Honor Warrior, Don Horn. Don Horn was a two-time letter winner at quarterback for the Aztecs in 1965 and 1966. His teams combined to go 19-2 over his two seasons, including a perfect 11-0 mark in 1966 as SDSU was voted the small college national champions in both the AP and UPI polls. Horn passed for 3,922 yards and 39 touchdowns, and he earned the team's John Simcox Memorial Trophy for the team MVP in 1966. He was also named a Little All-American in 1966. Horn was selected in the first round of the 1967 NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers.
