SAN DIEGO – San Diego State women’s tennis is gearing up for the annual ITA Southwest Regional Championships, which it will co-host alongside the University of San Diego, beginning Thursday. The tournament offers the Aztecs one of their three qualifying pathways to the NCAA Individual Championships. The two singles finalists and one doubles champion from this weekend’s competition will punch their ticket to Athens, Ga. in November.
The Aztecs will host student-athletes from Arizona, CSUN, USC, UC Riverside, Cal State Fullerton, UCSB, UCSD, LMU, UC Irvine, Cal Poly, Long Beach State, UCLA, Grand Canyon and Hawai’i.
Competition will get underway at the Aztec Tennis Center at 9 a.m. PT, beginning with the doubles round of 64. Azuna Ichioka/Constanza Fernandez Rincon and Teja Tirunelveli/Vesa Gjinaj will pair up for the first round of doubles competition while Vessa Turley and Tea Lukic take a bye into the second round.
Following doubles play, Turley, Tirunelveli and Rincon will take the court for the qualifying singles round of 64, beginning at 10 a.m.
