ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- The San Diego State men’s golf team fired a 16-under-par 272 to blow past the 15-team field and win the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate by six strokes Saturday in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
The Aztecs finished at 31-under-par 833 on the par-72, 7,555-yard UNM Championship Course, six strokes ahead of tournament host New Mexico (-25). No. 23 Brigham Young (-21), UNLV (-20) and Santa Clara (-18) rounded out the top 5.
It was the first team title for SDSU since claiming the 2025 Mountain West Championship and its fourth Tucker Intercollegiate title (also 2010, 2016 and 2022).
Freshman Brayden Forte (Aurora, Colo.) continued his impressive debut season by sharing medalist honors with New Mexico’s Johnnie Clark at 13-under 203. The co-medalists attempted to decide the individual title, but both players birdied the first two holes of the playoff and, due to travel issues, it was declared a draw. Forte carded a 2-under 70 in today’s final round after opening with a 6-under 66 on Friday and finishing up his second round with a 5-under 67 this morning.
It was the second consecutive victory for Forte, who claimed the Vuori Invitational, Sept. 14-15, in his second career collegiate event by two strokes at 5-under 208. Forte’s two wins are already tied for the third most in San Diego State’s recorded single-season history, only trailing J.J. Spaun’s three titles in 2011-12 and Puwit Anupansuebsai’s three in 2020-21.
Santa Clara’s Emil Nielsen, the leader after two rounds, came in solo third in the 88-player field at -11.
Junior Harry Takis (Brisbane, Australia) carded a 6-under 66 to move up seven places into a three-way tie for fourth at -10. Takis’ final round featured an eagle on the par-5, 606-yard ninth hole, five birdies and a lone bogey. Takis tied with Brigham Young’s Kihei Akina and New Mexico’s Thayer Plewe.
Junior Lequan Wang (San Mateo, Calif./UC Davis) tied for 17th at -4 following a 69 on Saturday. Wang also eagled No. 9 and had five birdies, which were offset by two bogeys and a double bogey on the par-4, 402-yard 12th hole.
Freshman Miles Kuhl (Boulder, Colo.) shot a 2-under 70 today and tied for 29th at 1-under 215. He had four birdies and two bogeys on the day.
Sophomore Beau Sahr (Eagle, Idaho) tied for 35th at even-par 216 with a 5-under 67 on Saturday. Sahr eagled the par-5, 544-yard first hole, and also had five birdies and two bogeys.
San Diego State begins its spring slate, Jan. 25-26, at the Southwestern Invitational in Westlake Village, California.
