ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- The San Diego State men’s golf team and freshman Brayden Forte (Aurora, Colo.) are each leading the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate, which was suspended due to rainy weather Friday in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
The Aztecs are leading the 15-team field at 14-under-par on the par-72, 7,555-yard UNM Championship Course with 4-to-6 holes to play in the second round, two shots ahead of Santa Clara and host New Mexico. No. 23 Brigham Young and Colorado are tied for fourth at -11.
Forte, who earned medalist honors the last time out at the Vuori Invitational, Sept. 14-15, in just his second career collegiate event, sits atop the leaderboard at -11. Forte opened with a 6-under 66 with an impressive nine birdies and three bogeys. He was at 5-under through 14 holes in the suspended second round thanks to five birdies and no bogeys.
Forte (-11) leads Santa Clara’s Emil Nielsen (-9) by two strokes, with New Mexico’s Johnnie Clark (-8) and Thayer Plewe (-7), and Colorado’s Brendon Knight (-7) rounding out the top 5 in the 88-man field.
Junior All-Anerican Harry Takis (Brisbane, Australia) is tied for 22nd at -2, opening with a 3-under 69 and at +1 through 12 holes in the second round.
Freshman Miles Kuhl (Boulder, Colo.) is tied for 26th at -1 after shooting a 2-under 70. He’s 1-over through 13 holes in the second round.
Junior Lequan Wang (San Mateo, Calif./UC Davis) opened with an even-par 72 and is even through 13 holes in the second round, which has him in a tie for 32nd at E.
Sophomore Beau Sahr (Eagle, Idaho) is tied for 51st at +2 through 31 holes (73-(+1 through 13 holes).
The suspended second round will get underway at 7:30 a.m. MT (6:30 a.m. PT) Saturday, followed immediately by the final round.
