SAN DIEGO – Jayna Clemens and Vesa Gjinaj advanced in doubles, and Clemens advanced in singles, at the opening day of the USTA SoCal Intercollegiate Championships on Thursday. They will return to action at the University of San Diego’s Hogan Tennis Center on Saturday morning.
The seniors picked up their first win as a doubles duo, making it through the round of 32 with a dominant 6-0 win over San Diego’s Charlotte Keitel and Maria Shmakova.
In singles competition, Clemens came out strong in the round of 64, taking down Boise State’s Carla Grignac in a three-set thriller. After coming up short 6-7 (5-7) in the first, the Aztec bounced back for a 7-6 (7-3) win in the second set before clinching the victory by a final set score of 6-3.
Gjinaj battled to three sets in her matchup against BYU’s Chelsea Bluestein, taking the first set 6-2 before falling 2-6, 1-6 in the second and third.
The Aztecs will be back for the doubles round of 16 at 8 a.m., where they will face Kaia Giribalan and Sein Myoung out of Stanford. Clemens will then take on Nevada’s Nikol Mircheva in the singles round of 32 at 9:45 a.m.
