SDSU Set for William H. Tucker Intercollegiate

SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego State men’s golf team travels to Albuquerque, New Mexico, to compete in the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate this weekend.

The William H. Tucker Intercollegiate, hosted by New Mexico, will take place on the par-72, 7,555-yard UNM Championship Course with two 18-hole rounds on Friday and the final round on Saturday.

San Diego State, which is receiving votes in the preseason Bushnell/Golfweek DI Collegiate Poll, will be joined in the 15-team field by the host Lobos, along with No. 23 Brigham Young, No. 24 Arizona, Arkansas State, Colorado, Grand Canyon, Long Beach State, Missouri, New Mexico State, Santa Clara, SMU, UC Santa Barbara, UNLV and UTEP.

The Aztecs are scheduled to tee off from the 10th tee at 7:30 a.m. MT (6:30 a.m. PT), playing with Arkansas State, Colorado and UTEP. Sunday’s round will also go off with split tees, based on scores from the first two rounds.

SDSU will go with the lineup of junior Harry Takis (Brisbane, Australia), freshman Brayden Forte (Aurora, Colo.), sophomore Beau Sahr (Eagle, Idaho), junior Lequan Wang (San Mateo, Calif./UC Davis) and freshman Miles Kuhl (Boulder, Colo.).

Forte leads San Diego State through two tournaments with a 74.00 stroke average and is coming off a two-shot victory at the Vuori Invitational. Competing in just his second career collegiate event, Forte fired a 5-under-par 208 win by two strokes over Brigham Young’s Kihei Akina (-3). Forte was one on just four players in the 72-man field to shoot under-par for the tournament.

Sahr ranks second on the team at 74.33, while Takis (74.67) and Wang (75.33) are the next three. Kuhl carded a 19-over 235 in his lone event and will be in the starting five for the first time.

The Scarlet and Black will be competing in the Tucker Intercollegiate for the 15th time in the last 20 years - but just the third since 2019 - while making its 20th appearance overall.

The Aztecs have won three Tucker Intercollegiate team titles, including 2010, 2016 and 2022, along with runner-up efforts in 2007 and 2009. In 2022, SDSU claimed the team title by eight strokes at 16-under-par 848. Youssef Guezzale was the top performer for San Diego State at 6-under, good enough for a tie for fifth. In 2016, SDSU posted a winning total of 1-under 863 to outlast Colorado State (+9) and BYU (+14), bolstered by PJ Samiere's (-2) fourth-place individual finish. Meanwhile in 2010, the Scarlet and Black rallied from a seven-stroke deficit during the final round to edge North Texas by one stroke.

The Tucker Intercollegiate, which was named in honor of former University of New Mexico groundskeeper William H. Tucker, is the second-oldest men's college tournament in the country now in its 71st season (founded in 1955) behind only the New England Intercollegiate. Previous individual competitors include Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Tommy Armour III, Tim Herron, Duffy Waldorf, Notah Begay and Matt Kuchar.

Since it was officially opened in 1967, the UNM Championship Golf Course has been one of the finest facilities of its kind nationwide. It has been nationally recognized by Golf Digest Magazine as one of the top-25 public courses in the country, and in January of 1991 Golfweek Magazine rated all public and private courses in the country by state, and dubbed The Championship Course the number one course to play in New Mexico. The Course is still holding strong in the rankings seven years later, and in 1998, Golfweek tabbed the Championship Course No. 2 in the West, behind only the Stanford University Golf Course in Palo Alto, California. The Championship Course is no stranger to major tournaments. It was the site of the 1950, 1976 and 1992 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championships as well as the 1998 NCAA Championships. In 1987 the course was the site of the women’s NCAA tourney.

San Diego State begins its spring slate, Jan. 25-26, at the Southwestern Invitational in Westlake Village, California.
