CARY, N.C. – Vessa Turley, Tea Lukic and Azu Ichioka wrapped up their stay at the annual ITA All-American Championships on Sunday after Ichioka earned her first singles victory in the consolation round and Turley and Lukic came up short in singles and doubles. The Aztecs leave Cary, N.C. with three wins on the weekend.
Ichioka claimed her first collegiate win on Sunday afternoon, taking down UCLA’s Kayla Chung 6-3, 6-4 in the consolation round.
After defeating Liberty University’s Diana Ilie 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-4) on Saturday, Lukic was bested 6-0, 6-4 by Bella Payne out of the University of Georgia.
Turley and Lukic followed up their 7-5, 3-6, [10-5] doubles victory in the pre-qualifying round of 32 with a round of 16 matchup against Florida’s Nikola Daubnerova and Brooke Black. The Aztecs came up short 6-4 in the first set, but rallied to a dominant 6-2 win in the second set. The duo battled in the 10-point tiebreaker, but were ultimately downed 10-5.
Next up, select Aztecs will take the stage at the ITF W50 Berkeley to represent their home countries in Berkeley, Calif., beginning tomorrow. Afterwards, the team will compete in the USTA SoCal Intercollegiate Championships from Sep. 24-28, hosted at the University of San Diego’s Hogan Tennis Center.
