SAN DIEGO – San Diego State Football wrapped up their 17th fall camp practice with the 2026 season opener just over 10 days away. Temperatures reached the low-80s with the players taking the field in helmets and shoulder pads for their first on-field work out of the week.
The first half of practice was highlighted by an extended walkthrough period before breaking off into various special teams’ drills including punt return and punt protection formations. Once they transitioned to the grass, the team focused on various offense vs. defense situations.
Head coach Sean Lewis took some time to speak to the media and emphasized the Aztec’s approach to this week serving as a “mock” game week. While the team prepares for their season opener in roughly 11 days, coach Lewis made note of the newly elected team captains who have shined as leaders both on and off the field.
“It is pretty exciting. Obviously, the guys did a great job. Our players voted on team captains over the weekend and we announced that yesterday. Really proud of all those guys and the leadership they exhibit. It is a pretty neat opportunity for Tano [Letuli] being a three-time captain. I believe that's the first and only other one besides KOC [Aztec’s quarterback and Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell]. So that's elite company. Obviously, Lucky leads with his actions and finds his own way to lead with his own voice. Max Garrison, special teams, is a core four guy and has done tremendous amounts of selfless work for this team. Going all the way back to even the spring, playing some running back and still knowing that role and that opportunity is there for him as well in case need be. Obviously, I mentioned Tano and then add Malachi [Finau], as we talked about, not just a handyman, but obviously a great leader as well for the team as we go forward. So yeah, really pleased for those guys, excited for them to take the next step and even be more vocal, holding the standard, driving the culture and continuing to cultivate and build upon what we stand watch over each and every single.”
While the team captains will be looked upon to lead, Coach Lewis also spoke about the development of the secondary which was elite for SDSU last season with NFL Draft first round pick Chris Johnson leading the position group.
“We need Josiah Cox to continue to mature, step up, and play an impactful role. Mike Lindsey has been very productive this camp at the cornerback position. Need him to continue to do great things. Zay Green [Isaiah Green] has been productive this camp in the back end. There are guys that will emerge. It's the beauty of what we do and I've gotten really excited at this point about guys and how they practice… I'm excited about the work and the process and the positions that Coach Sum [Demetrius Sumler], Coach C.J. [coach C.J. McGorisk] Coach Sut [coach Tyler Sutton], are putting those guys in as well as Coach Coop [AJ Cooper], and I know they'll be trained. I know they'll be prepared. I know they'll be ready.”
The Aztecs will now look to wrap up the third week of fall camp with their 18th workout set tomorrow morning. The first game of the season will be a home matchup against the Vikings of Portland State on Saturday, September 5. SDSU’s home slate also includes a non-conference game on Sept. 19 against James Madison (7 p.m. PT), and Pac-12 home matchups with Texas State (Oct. 3 at 7:30 p.m. PT), Fresno State (Oct. 17 at 7:30 p.m. PT), Washington State (Oct. 31 at 4 p.m. PT) and Utah State (Nov. 14 at 6:30 p.m. PT).

Season Tickets
Season tickets remain the best value for Aztec football at Snapdragon Stadium. Season ticket pricing has been lowered across the board to make tickets more affordable and accessible for the loyal fans and community. The four available games at Snapdragon Stadium include the Sept. 5 opener against Portland State at 6:30 p.m. PT, the Sept. 19 game vs. James Madison at 7 p.m. PT, SDSU’s inaugural Pac-12 game on Oct. 3 against Texas State at 7:30 p.m. PT and the final home game of the season on Nov. 14 vs. Utah State at 6:30 p.m. PT.
