SAN DIEGO – San Diego State head women’s soccer coach Mike Friesen has announced the hiring of Matt Hall as an associate head coach. Hall spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach at the University of San Diego.

A season ago, San Diego went undefeated in its first eight matches of non-conference play, setting a program record and becoming one of the final eight teams in the nation to lose a match. The Toreros ended up setting a West Coast Conference record with seven draws and led the conference with 13 Academic All-WCC selections. In his first season with USD in 2024, Hall led the Toreros to a draw with No. 11 Santa Clara in the season finale.

Prior to joining the Toreros, Hall spent time with San Diego Loyal SC, of the USL Championship league. He was an assistant coach, working with the goalkeepers and center backs. In addition, he led the Loyal select team, helping two players sign with the senior club. The Loyal finished as one of the top three teams in their division and qualified for the postseason in three of their four seasons.

From 2019-23, Hall also served as the head coach at MiraCosta College in Oceanside. During his last two seasons, Hall led the Spartans to a 31-6-3 record including a 12-0-2 conference mark in 2023, his final season with the team. They won the PCAC title and Hall was named the league’s Coach of the Year.

A mainstay on The Mesa, Hall spent twenty years with San Diego State’s men’s soccer program. He spent three years in goal for the Aztecs from 1996-98 and finished his playing career with 213 saves, the most in program history at the time. He served as the goalkeepers coach for the only three players to surpass him, Brian Barnes (1999-02, 282), Adam Allmaras (2014-17, 260) and Tally Hall (2003-06, 256). Hall’s 89 saves in 1998 have been bested only by Barnes, who had 90 in 2000 and 98 in 2002 under Hall’s tutelage. In 2005, Hall oversaw Tally Hall’s (no relation) program record 88.9 shots-on-goal save percentage, the best in the nation, and another program record with a goals against average of 0.49, the second-best mark in the country. Tally Hall was named an All-American in consecutive seasons from 2005-06, becoming the first Aztec men’s player to do so since the 1980s. In 2016, Allmaras allowed just 12 goals during the regular season, an achievement only accomplished twice previously by SDSU. As a team, SDSU ranked third in the nation in save percentage, fourth in shutout percentage and tenth in GAA while Allmaras ranked fourth in save percentage nationally with 11 shutouts. Overall, the Aztecs had 13 MLS draft picks and ten All-Region selections during Hall’s time with the men’s team.

Hall finished his bachelor's degree in history at USD in 2001. He lives in San Diego with his wife Kelli and their two daughters.
