Aztecs Take Down Nevada 4-2

No. 43 San Diego State women’s tennis earned its 15th win of the season on Saturday, defeating Nevada 4-2 on the road.

RENO, Nev. – No. 43 San Diego State women’s tennis earned its 15th win of the season on Saturday, defeating Nevada 4-2 on the road. The Aztecs improve to 15-3 overall and 7-1 in conference play. They remain tied with Boise State and UNLV for first place in the Mountain West standings.

The Wolfpack fall to 7-10 on the season and 3-5 in the league.

Nevada got out to an early lead after capturing the doubles point with wins on courts one and two. Gloria Alogo and Liisa Varul took court three 6-3 over Kennedy Robinson and Kariman Buqai, but No. 57 Jo-Yee Chan and Vessa Turley were tripped up 6-3 by Marlene Foerster and Silvia-Maria Costache in the top spot. Ninon Martinache and Jayna Clemens then fell 7-6 (9-7) to Amahee Charrier and Petra Janigova on court two.

The Wolfpack captured the first point in singles competition on court one where Chan was downed 6-3, 6-1 by Charrier.

The Aztecs rallied to four straight victories. Teja Tirunelveli picked up a 6-2, 7-6 (7-1) victory over Janigova on court five while Vesa Gjinaj took down Robinson 6-3, 6-1 in the fourth spot to tie up the score. Clemens then earned a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Costache on the third court. Varul was the clincher for San Diego State, defeating Wiem Boubaker 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 on court six.

Next up, the Aztecs host Wyoming on April 10.
