SAN DIEGO – San Diego State men’s tennis hosted 74th-ranked Utah State at the Aztec Tennis Center on Thursday. The Aztecs were unable to overcome the Aggies in a battle for first place in the Mountain West, ultimately tripped up 4-0.
William Kleege and Aleksi Lofman earned their 10th win of the season on the top court in doubles competition, taking down No. 84 Xavier Calvelo and Jakub Medved 6-3. The Aggies captured the point with wins on court two, where Eugenio Gonzalez Fitzmaurice and Imran Daniel Hazli were downed 6-2 by Jean-Baptiste Badon and Dmitri Goubin, and court three, where Brock Anderson and Lars Johann fell 6-3 to Eliot Nobel and Roman Vengar.
Utah State was able to tally points on courts one, two and four in singles competition. In the top court matchup between Aleksi Lofman and Jean-Baptiste Badon, the Aztec came up short 7-6 (7-1), 6-4. Finn Willman also battled to a tiebreaker in his first set against Nobel in the fourth spot, but was bested 7-6 (7-2), 6-2. Calvelo clinched the match for the Aggies on court two, where Gonzalez Fitzmaurice fell 7-5, 6-1.
Johann and Medved were tied up at 6-3, 4-6, 2-2 on court five when the match was called, while Hazli trailed Vengar 6-4, 4-5 in the third spot and Anderson was at a 6-4, 3-5 disadvantage against Goubin on the sixth court.
The Aztecs return to action at noon PT on Saturday as they take on No. 61 Boise State on the road.
