SAN DIEGO – San Diego State women’s track and field will be busy this weekend as the team prepares to split the roster across a pair of meets. The distance team will race across five different events at the Steve Scott Invitational hosted by UC Irvine while the rest of the program heads to Texas to compete in the Texas invitational hosted by the Longhorns of The University of Texas at Austin.
The action will begin on Thursday at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas. The Aztec’s high jump team featuring Xiamara Young, Jenna Fee Feyerabend, Giselle Galles, Alyssa Alumbres and Alexandria Rogers will be the first to compete with their start time scheduled for 3:00 p.m. PST. On the track, the 200-meter dash will feature nine Aztec’s, the most of any event this weekend. Aji Mbye enters the weekend with the Aztec’s top 200m time having run 23.34 earlier this month at the Aztec Invitational. The hurdles team will also compete on Thursday with Anna Mager, Lidia Major, Karina Janik and Charlize James competing in the 400-meter hurdles. Mager and Major both raced in this event at the Mt. SAC Relays two weeks ago with Mager running a season best 58.77.
San Diego State’s pole vault team will wrap up Thursday’s slate of events with a 4:00 p.m. PST start time. Isabella Nilsen and Sydney Ash have both cleared 4.00m this season with Nilsen posting the eighth best outdoor vault in program history at the Triton Invite when she cleared 4.21m. Nilsen is currently the second ranked pole vaulter in the Mountain West while Ash and Peyton Bedrosian are also among the top 10 in the conference.
On Friday, SDSU will compete in both the 4x100 and 4x400 meter relays. They will also round out the rest of their scheduled running events including the 400 and 100-meter dashes as well as the 100-meter hurdles. Freshman Shari Hurdman ran the seventh fastest outdoor 400 in program history at the Mt. SAC Relays and is poised to continue her breakout freshman season. The team will also compete in the throws for just the second time this season. Heptathlon standout Jenna Fee Feyerabend will toss the javelin outside of the heptathlon for the first time this season. She recently threw a personal best of 44.40m during her heptathlon performance at the Aztec Invitational. Ana Luisa Couto Soares Ferraz will throw the shot put and currently owns a season best mark of 13.00m.
Meanwhile, the Aztec’s distance team will stay in southern California as they head to UC Irvine to compete in the annual Steve Scott Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
Friday will open with the 800-meter run invitational heats where four Aztecs will race. Freshman Ginger Oberg currently owns the top time for SDSU running a new personal best of 2:10.74 at the Bryan Clay Invitational. After the 800m Samantha Wood will compete in the 3,000-meter steeplechase for the fifth time this season. Wood is currently the owner of the third fastest steeplechase time in program history having run 10:43.63 at the Bab Larsen Distance Invitational in late March. Friday’s action will conclude with five Aztecs racing in the invitational section of the 1,500-meter run. Sophomore Sara Jones owns the four fastest times by an Aztec this season and posted the only sub-4:30 times by an Aztec so far this year.
Saturday will feature a short stint on the track. Elliana Lomeli will run in the open 800-meter section at 12:40 p.m. PST before the duo of Ginger Oberg and Tatum Zinkin compete in the 400-meter dash to wrap up the weekend.
Individual Notes
- San Diego State’s pole vault team is currently ranked #11 in the nation according to USTFCCCA. Isabella Nilsen is the second-ranked pole vaulter in the Mountain West.
- Jenna Fee Feyerabend is ranked sixth in NCAA Division I for the heptathlon. Her season best score of 5,828 is also the top mark in the Mountain West. Isabella Nilsen (Pole Vault), Xiamara Young (Long Jump) and Jada Pierre (100m-Hurdles) all rank in the top 40 of the NCAA in their respective events.
- The Aztecs have posted 18 first place finishes so far during the outdoor season. Jenna Fee Feyerabend and Jada Pierre lead the way with three first place victories apiece. Aji Mbye has two including a 100-meter dash win at the Aztec Invite.
- The Aztecs currently have an athlete ranked in the top five in the Mountain West in the pole vault, long jump, triple jump, high jump, heptathlon, 100m dash, 200m dash, 400m dash, 100m hurdles and 400m hurdles.
