Aztecs Moving on to Semifinals at MW Championships

San Diego State women’s tennis is advancing to Friday’s semifinal round of the Mountain West Championships following a sweeping 4-0 victory over Wyoming on Thursday.

LAS VEGAS – San Diego State women’s tennis is advancing to Friday’s semifinal round of the Mountain West Championships following a sweeping 4-0 victory over Wyoming on Thursday at the Darling Tennis Center in Las Vegas. The top-seeded Aztecs will take on the winner between No. 4 Air Force and No. 5 Grand Canyon at 11 a.m. on Friday.

The Aztecs improve to a 19-3 overall record, earning their 11th shutout win of the season.

It was a battle for the doubles point, which San Diego State won on courts one and three. Jo-Yee Chan and Vessa Turley first took down Silver Bijlsma and Violetta Borodina 6-4 on the top court. The Cowgirls responded with a narrow 7-5 victory on court two, where Jayna Clamens and Ninon Martinache fell to Eugenia Ceinos and Madlena Orlova. Gloria Alogo and Liisa Varul captured the point in the third spot after defeating Ruby Young and Serina Abriola 7-6 (7-3).

San Diego State won the first set in five matches in singles competition, earning three straight victories to complete the sweep. Chan put the second point on the board after cruising to a 6-3, 6-3 win over Anastasiia Kochelaevskaia on court one. Vesa Gjinaj then extended the lead after taking down Orlova 6-2, 6-1 in the fourth spot.

Teja Tirunelveli was the clincher, punching the team’s ticket to the semifinals with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 victory over Abriola on court five.

Alogo led Bijlsma 6-4, 4-6, 5-0 on court two, while Clemens was ahead 6-4, 2-6, 4-1 against Borodina on the third court and Varul was tied up at 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 0-0 with Ceinos in the sixth spot when the match was called.

The Aztecs will return to action at the Darling Tennis Center tomorrow at 11 a.m. PT where they will look to solidify their spot in Saturday’s championship match.
