LAS VEGAS – San Diego State men’s tennis is advancing to the semifinal of the Mountain West Championships following a 4-1 win over Air Force on Wednesday. The second-seeded Aztecs improve to a 12-11 overall record and will take on the winner between No. 3 Boise State and No. 6 New Mexico on Thursday at 5 p.m. PT.
The Aztecs rallied from behind in doubles to capture the first point of the match. After Brock Anderson and Lars Johann fell 6-2 to Phillip Deaton and Matthew Staton on court three, Aleksi Lofman and William Kleege responded with a 6-3 victory over Jack Brown and Tyler Leaird on the top court. Eugenio Gonzalez Fitzmaurice and Imran Daniel Hazli then clinched the point after defeating AJ Moore and Langdon Tinglead 7-5 in the second spot.
Gonzalez Fitzmaurice put the second point on the board for the Scarlet and Black, taking down Deaton 6-3, 6-2 on the third court. Hazli then extended the lead, cruising to a 6-1, 6-4 win over Brown on court two.
The Falcons took court four, where Finn Willman was bested 6-3, 6-3 by Tingleaf.
Johann clinched the win for the Aztecs, sending them to the semifinal with a 7-6 (7-1), 6-4 victory against Fitzinger in the fifth spot.
The Aztecs will return to action at 5 p.m. tomorrow, facing the winner of today’s final match.
