SAN JOSE, Calif. – The San Diego State softball team (21-20, 6-10 Mountain West) came up short in the resumption of the series finale against San Jose State (12-27, 4-12 MW) on Sunday, with the Spartans rallying for four runs in the bottom of the fifth to win 8-0.

The game picked up with a runner on first base and no outs in the bottom of the fifth inning with San Jose State ahead 4-0. Ahmiya Noriega walked before Reina Zermeno hit an RBI ground-rule double. Two more runs crossed the plate on Leata Sherlin’s triple down the right field line to make it 7-0. Ava Schaffel struck out Shay McDowell for the first out of the inning, but Samantha Blachly was hit by a pitch and pinch runner Haley Reeve stole second base. The Spartans executed a walk-off squeeze play, with Gigi Ortega reaching on an infield single while Sherlin scored from third to end the game.

UP NEXT
San Diego State returns home to start its final homestand of the season. SDSU will play a three-game series against No. 20/25 Grand Canyon from April 17-19 and another a week later against Boise State from April 24-26. Both series are Friday-Sunday with start times of 6 p.m. PT Friday, 4 p.m. Saturday and noon on Sunday. Against GCU, Friday night is 90’s night, Saturday is the alumni game with a silicone bracelet giveaway and will air on Mountain West Network and on Sunday, the team will sign autographs following the contest.
