SAN DIEGO – San Diego State men’s tennis hosted No. 69 Grand Canyon at the Aztec Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon. The Aztecs won two matches and battled to three sets on three courts in singles competition, but were unable to overcome the Lopes in an ultimate 4-1 defeat.
Eugenio Gonzalez Fitzmaurice and Imran Daniel Hazli were able to capture a win on court three in doubles, taking down Charlie Pade and Tim Hohmann 6-3, but Tristan Beard and Andres Loizas won the top court matchup against William Kleege and Aleksi Lofman by a score of 6-2 before Daniel Jankoski and Brice Patoux clinched the point on court two, where Denis Maijorov and Lars Johann came up short 6-4.
The Lopes extended their lead, winning two straight singles matches. Brock Anderson was bested 6-1, 6-2 by Patoux on court five while Maijorov fell 6-1, 6-4 against Pade in the sixth spot.
Hazli put a point on the board for the Scarlet and Black after taking court two 6-3, 6-2 over Diordan Macababbad.
Loizas clinched the match for Grand Canyon on court three where Finn Willman came up short in a three set battle 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Gonzalez Fitzmaurice was all tied up with Berard 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 2-2 on the top court when the match was called. Johann led Jankoski 1-6, 6-4, 5-4 in the fourth spot.
Next up, the Aztecs will host New Mexico in their regular season finale on April 19 at noon following senior day celebrations.
