SAN DIEGO – No. 40 San Diego State women’s tennis extended its five-match winning streak on Friday, taking down Wyoming 4-1 at the Aztec Tennis Center. The Aztecs boast a 16-3 overall record and 8-1 in conference play, tying them with Boise State and UNLV for first place in the Mountain West standings.
The Cowboys jumped out to an early lead after taking the doubles point with wins on courts two and three. Gloria Alogo and Liisa Varul first fell 6-2 against Eugenia Ceinos and Madlena Orlova in the second spot. No. 81 Jo-Yee Chan and Vessa Turley responded with a 6-4 victory against Violetta Borodina and Silver Bijlsma on the top court. The point was captured on court three where Jayna Clemens and Teja Tirunelveli were tripped up 7-5 by Serina Abriola and Ruby Young.
After falling behind, the Aztecs came out strong in singles competition, winning the first set in all six matches on their way to four straight set victories on courts one, three, five and six.
Chan got the job done on the top court, taking down Anastasiia Kochelaevskaia 6-2, 6-2. Clemens then gave the advantage to San Diego State with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Borodina in the third spot before Varul earned a 6-3, 6-0 victory against Abriola on court six.
Tirunelveli was the clincher for the Aztecs, taking court five 6-2, 7-5 over Ceinos.
The Aztecs led in the two unfinished matches. Alogo was ahead 6-4, 4-5 against Bijlsma on court two while Gjinaj had a 6-4, 3-3 lead over Orlova in the fourth spot.
“We had kind of a slow start today in doubles, but our response in singles was amazing to see,” said Head Coach Nicolas Vinel. “It’s been a good season, but now it’s crunch time. The extra focus, extra work and extra attention to detail need to be there right now. This is the time of year where the great teams shine. We need to make sure that we stay on top of everything, trust what we’ve been working on and finish the season strong.”
Next up, the team is headed to Fort Collins, Colo. to take on Colorado State in the final road match of the season on Sunday. First serve is set for 10:30 a.m. PT.
