SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – San Diego State men’s tennis earned a gritty win on the road on Friday night, rallying from behind in three singles matches to topple No. 67 Cal Poly 4-2 in San Luis Obispo. The Aztecs improve to a 5-8 record with their third straight win while the Mustangs fall to 7-4 on the season.
The Aztecs jumped out to an early lead after capturing the doubles point, which they have done in five consecutive matches. After Brock Anderson and Lars Johann fell 6-4 to Raz Haviv and Leo Matthysen on court three, Aleksi Lofman and William Kleege evened the score with a 6-4 win over Luc Hoeijmans and Jovan Lubbe. Lofman and Kleege have been a dominant doubles duo, boasting a perfect 7-0 record on the top court. Eugenio Gonzalez Fitzmaurice and Imran Daniel Hazli then secured the point with a narrow 7-6 (7-0) victory against Jack Cross and Sean Kamyshev in the second spot.
The Mustangs bounced back with two straight wins in singles competition. On the fifth court, Finn Willman was tripped up 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) by Kamyshev. Hazli was then bested 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 by Lubbe on court two to give Cal Poly a 2-1 advantage.
Lofman, Johann and Gonzalez Fitzmaurice, who each dropped their first set, all rallied to wins in their respective matches to push the Aztecs to a win. First, Lofman took down Hoeijmans 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 in the top spot. Johann then defeated Cross 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 on the fourth court. Gonzalez Fitzmaurice was the clincher, capturing the team win with a 6-7 (4-7), 6-2, 6-0 victory against Haviv on court three.
The Aztecs are back in action tomorrow, taking on Pacific in a neutral site match at noon.
