No. 22 San Diego State women’s tennis captured its ninth win of the season on Friday morning, taking down Cal Poly 5-2 at the Aztec Tennis Center.

SAN DIEGO – No. 22 San Diego State women’s tennis captured its eighth win of the season on Friday morning, taking down Cal Poly 5-2 at the Aztec Tennis Center. The team improves to an 8-1 record, maintaining its seven-match winning streak. The Mustangs fall to 6-4 on the season.

The Aztecs continue to find success in doubles competition, winning their seventh straight doubles point of the season. Gloria Alogo and Liisa Varul struck first, earning a 6-1 victory over Amy Leather and Tia Bonita Jakupovic-Kljako on court three. Jayna Clemens and Ninon Martinache then fell 7-5 to Candela Aparisi and Natalie Lynch in the second spot. It’s the first loss of the spring for Clemens and Martinache, who now hold a 7-1 dual record and 12-2 overall. No. 42 Jo-Yee Chan and Vessa Turley clinched the point for the Aztecs, taking the top court 6-4 over Kennedy Buntrock and Jessica MacCallum. They have now won six straight in the top spot.

Teja Tirunelveli got off the court first in singles competition, securing a 6-1, 7-5 win over Alexandra Ozerets in the fourth spot. Chan then extended San Diego State’s lead with a 6-1, 7-5 victory against Buntrock on the top court.

Clemens clinched the win for the Scarlet and Black, taking court three 6-1, 4-6, 6-0 over Aparisi.

The teams opted to play out the match. The Mustangs got on the board with a win on court five where Varul was bested 6-3, 5-7, 6-0 by Lynch. The Aztecs responded with a victory in the sixth spot where Vesa Gjinaj took down Sarah MacCallum 6-1, 3-6, 6-4. Jessica MacCallum earned the final point of the day on court two where Martinache was downed 7-5, 1-6, 6-3.

Next up, San Diego State kicks off conference play against Fresno State at the Aztec Tennis Center on March 13 beginning at 10 a.m. The team will play one more non-conference opponent when they take on No. 41 SMU on March 26.
