Aztec Baseball's Jabin Trosky Named to Brooks Wallace Award Watch List
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – San Diego State redshirt junior Jabin Trosky was named to the Brooks Wallace Award Watch List, as announced by the College Baseball Foundation.
The award honors the nation's top shortstop and will be presented by the College Baseball Foundation later this year. It is named for former Texas Tech shortstop Brooks Wallace, who played for the Red Raiders from 1977 to 1980. Wallace died of leukemia at the age of 27.
In his first season with the Aztecs after transferring from Oregon State, Trosky was one of 100 shortstops selected to the watch list.
At the plate, Trosky leads the Scarlet and Black in batting average (.377), on-base percentage (.421) and hits (20). In addition, the Carmel, California, native tops the squad with multiple hits in seven games and ranks second in doubles (5) and stolen bases (3) while sharing the second spot in runs scored (11).
Entering the weekend, Trosky is also tied for third in the Mountain West in hits and shares the sixth spot in doubles.
A starter in all 13 games, Trosky has made 12 putouts with 20 assists at the shortstop position and has contributed to five double plays, compiling a .970 fielding percentage thus far.
“Our staff is excited to get another year started looking for that special player to represent Brooks' Award,“ said Larry Wallace, co-chair of the Brooks Wallace Award. “We will dig deep to find the personal qualities as well as the physical attributes that best exemplify what we look for in the Brooks Wallace Award winner. It's early but this list is already shaping up to be a competitive race with some big numbers from some new guys and some familiar faces on the list as well.”
Trosky and the Aztecs open a three-game series against Saint Mary’s tonight at Tony Gwynn Stadium, starting at 6 p.m. PT.
