SAN DIEGO – San Diego State women’s tennis is taking home both Mountain West weekly awards after Jo-Yee Chan earned Player of the Week and Vessa Turley garnered Freshman of the Week honors, the conference announced on Tuesday. This is the second player of the week nod of the season for Chan and the first conference award of Turley’s career.

The two Aztecs were vital in San Diego State’s 4-3 win at No. 19 San Diego on Saturday, playing in the top spot in both singles and doubles.

Chan and Turley, the 42nd-ranked doubles team in the nation, helped capture the crucial doubles point against the Toreros. Facing Ines Leon and Kristina Nordikyan, the duo earned a 6-4 win on the top court to even the score after the Aztecs dropped the first match on court three. Jayna Clemens and Ninon Martinache then clinched the point with a narrow 7-5 victory on the second court, which proved to be the difference in a final score of 4-3.

The senior and freshman duo holds a 5-1 dual match record and 16-3 overall, and is currently on a five-match winning streak.

Chan went 2-0 on the day to help lead the Aztecs to their top-20 victory, winning her top court matchup in singles as well. After taking the first set 6-2 over Charlotte Keitel, the senior fell 2-6 in the second, but bounced back for a 6-2 win in the third set to give San Diego State its third point. She is now 4-2 on the season in the top spot and holds a 15-6 overall record.

Next up, the Aztecs host Cal Poly at 10:30 a.m. on Friday.
