COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – San Diego State softball’s Ava Schaffel has earned the Mountain West Pitcher of the Week, the league announced Monday.
Schaffel joins Key-annah Pu’a as Aztecs to win the award this season after the right-handed pitcher appeared in two games of San Diego State’s series at New Mexico.
San Diego State (19-15, 4-5 Mountain West) was bested in a doubleheader on Saturday but bounced back on Sunday, earning a 10-3 win over the Lobos.
Schaffel appeared in the circle in two games. She struck out five hitters in 9.2 innings, allowing just two runs on four hits. Over the course of the weekend, she totaled a 1-0 record, a 1.45 ERA, a 0.83 WHIP and a 1.25 K:BB Ratio.
The sophomore pitched the final 3.2 innings in the series opener on Saturday, limiting the Lobos to one run on two hits with a strikeout. In Sunday’s series finale, Schaffel entered the circle with the Aztecs trailing 2-0 in the second inning and pitched the final six frames, earning the win after allowing just one run on two hits while striking out four. Four of her six innings were three up, three down.
San Diego State returns home for a three-game series against Utah State this weekend. The games are scheduled for 6 p.m. PT on Thursday and Friday and noon on Saturday. The games on Thursday and Saturday will be broadcast on Mountain West Network and Saturday is Aztec Kids Club Day featuring free children’s activities including a balloon artist and face painter.
