LOGAN, Utah – No. 31 San Diego State women’s tennis shut out Utah State 4-0 in Logan on Friday, improving to an 11-1 overall record, which is the program’s best start since at least the 1993 season. They are 3-0 in conference play after sweeping Fresno State, San Jose State and Utah State.
The Aggies fall to a 7-6 overall record and 1-2 in the league.
San Diego State captured its tenth consecutive doubles point with wins on courts one and three. No. 50 Jo-Yee Chan and Vessa Turley first took down Terezia Mlkva and Kylee Sperry in the top spot before Gloria Alogo and Liisa Varul clinched with a 6-2 win over Maria Paula Ramos Garcia and Chahd Tourkhani on court three. Ninon Martinache and Jayna Clemens led Natalie Paterova and Sabina Pintea 4-2 when the point was earned.
In singles competition, the Aztecs sealed the sweep with victories on courts one, five and six. Liisa Varul took court six 6-0, 6-3 against Sperry. Chan then put the third point on the board with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Mlkva on the top court. Vesa Gjinaj clinched the match after defeating Tourkhani 6-1, 6-2 on court five.
Teja Tirunelveli was ahead 6-3, 5-3 against Garcia on court four and Clemens led Paterova 6-3, 4-2 in the third spot when the match was called. Martinache was in a tight battle against Pintea, who led 7-6 (8-6), 1-1 on court two.
The Aztecs will return to action on Sunday as they take on Boise State at 10 a.m. PT.
