SDSU Completes Day Two of Pauma Valley Invitational

Kai Hirayama is in a tie for 12th to lead the Aztecs through 36 holes.

PAUMA VALLEY, Calif. -- The San Diego State men’s golf team slipped into 13th-place after two rounds of the Pauma Valley Invitational Tuesday in Pauma Valley, California.

The Aztecs, who are 28th in the latest Scoreboard powered by clippd computer rankings, dropped from a tie for ninth with No. 3 Florida to 13th after shooting a 7-over-par 291 on the par-71, 7,311-yard Pauma Valley Country Club. Through 36 holes of the 54-hole tournament, SDSU is at 8-over 576, ahead of Toledo (+9), East Tennessee State (+11) and Colorado State (+22) in the 16-team field. No. 15 Tennessee maintained its first-round lead with an even-par 284 and is still at -11 through two rounds, just ahead of No. 20 Georgia Tech (-10) and No. 3 Florida (-9).

Sophomore Kai Hirayama (Arcadia, Calif.) carded an even-par 71 in the second round and is tied for 12th out of 92 golfers at -3. Hirayama logged a single birdie and one bogey, while racking up 16 pars on the day.

Sophomore Harry Takis (Brisbane, Australia), the third-ranked player in the latest Scoreboard ratings, is tied for 29th at even-par 142 following a 1-under today. Starting on the par-5, 535-yard 10th hole, Takis was +2 through four holes, but went 3-under the rest of the way with four birdies and a bogey.

Senior Chanachon Chokprajakchat (Bangkok, Thailand), who was named the Mountain West Men’s Golfer of the Week on Friday after taking third at last week’s R.E. Lamkin Invitational, is tied for 44th at +2. After opening with a 3-under 68 on Monday, Chokprajakchat shot a 5-over 76 today two birdies, five bogeys and a double bogey on the par-4, 503-yard 15th hole.

Freshman Beau Sahr (Eagle, Idaho) was three shots better in the second round with a 74 and is tied for 81st at +9, while senior Tyler Kowack (San Diego/Canyon Crest Academy) is 92nd at +14 after a 79 today.

SMU’s Williams Sides shot his second straight 67 and is tied for Tennessee’s Lance Simpson for first at -8, two shots ahead of Georgia Tech’s Aidan Tran and Oklahoma’s Preston Stout, both at -6.

San Diego State begins its final round on the 10th hole at 9:28 a.m. PT Wednesday, playing alongside Toledo, East Tennessee State and Colorado State.
