SAN DIEGO – The San Diego State softball team (17-11, 2-1 MW) will leave the state of California for the first time in 2026 this week when it heads to Las Vegas for a three-game series at UNLV (13-15, 1-2 MW) from Friday through Sunday.
The game on Friday night is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. PT, Saturday’s contest is set for 3 p.m. and the series finale is planned for noon on Sunday. All three are on MW Network.
SDSU is 72-50 against UNLV all-time. The Aztecs swept a three-game series in San Diego last season, winning twice by the run rule. The year before, the Aztecs went to Las Vegas for the final week of the season and were a win away from clinching the Mountain West regular season title. Following defeats in the first two contests, the Aztecs exploded for ten runs in the fourth inning of the last game en route to a 13-4 victory in five innings to clinch the regular season championship and the top seed in that year’s Mountain West tournament, which the team also won. Against common opponents this season, SDSU is 3-1 while the Rebels are 1-5. Both teams have played California Baptist, Seattle U, UC Riverside and Wisconsin. UNLV’s win came in one of their two games against UC Riverside and the Rebels lost in five innings to Wisconsin and CBU. The Aztecs’ defeat came against Wisconsin, and the UC Riverside game was a run-rule win.
Last week, SDSU trounced California Baptist 8-0 in six innings on Wednesday in its final non-conference game of the regular season. SDSU scored all those runs with just one extra base hit, a double by Gabriella Terrones. Olivia Gigante had three hits and three RBIs in the contest. The Aztecs opened up Mountain West play with a three-game home series against Colorado State. San Diego State fell 2-0 before bouncing back with 2-1 and 2-0 wins against the Rams to take the series. The Aztecs’ pitching allowed just three runs in 27 innings across the four games, combining for a 0.78 team ERA. The trio of Faith Jordan, Key-annah Pu’a and Ava Schaffel were the only Aztecs to appear in the circle during the week. In Sunday’s series finale, Angie Yellen had a big day at the plate, driving in both runs with an RBI single in the first inning and a solo home run in the sixth.
Two-time MW Player of the Week Jade Ignacio (.441, 1.092 OPS, 3 HR, 22 RBI, 18 R, 9 2B, 5 SB) and Jazmin Williams (.402, 1.104 OPS, 23 RBI, 23 R, 5 SB) lead the Aztec hitters. Other top hitters for SDSU include Angie Yellen (.413, 1.025 OPS, 11 RBI, 13 R, 3 HR, 4 2B, 3 SB), Olivia Gigante (.268, .846 OPS, 6 HR, 21 RBI, 10 R, 3 2B), Lala Macario (.260, .673 OPS, 16 R) and Quinn Waiki (.337, .790 OPS, 10 RBI, 7 R, 5 2B). In the circle, Faith Jordan (2.72 ERA, 54.0 IP, 37 K, 7-3, 1 SV) and Ava Schaffel (4.32 ERA, 22.2 IP, 19 K, 1-0) have been major contributors to the pitching staff. Key-annah Pu’a (2.43 ERA, 57.2 IP, 24 K, 4-3, 1 SV) was selected as MW Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 16.
