SAN DIEGO – No. 25 San Diego State women’s tennis secured its first conference win of the season on Friday morning, shutting out Fresno State 4-0 at the Aztec Tennis Center to improve to a 9-1 overall record and 1-0 in the Mountain West. The Bulldogs fall to 7-6 on the season and 0-1 in conference play.
“Starting conference play with a win was very important to us,” said Head Coach Nicolas Vinel. “The girls did a good job in doubles after starting a little slow. Then they picked it up in singles and got it done on a good first day of conference matches. It’s our last season in the Mountain West and our goal remains to win the regular season and the tournament. It’s a process and every match is different, so we’re going to take it match by match.”
The team captured its eighth straight doubles point after taking courts one and two. Jo-Yee Chan and Vessa Turley posted a 6-1 win over Eliza Dunbar and Klara Vukicevic in the top spot before Jayna Clemens and Ninon Martinache clinched with a 6-3 victory against Louna Cormier and Andjela Lopicic on the second court. No. 42 Chan and Turley hold a 7-1 record on the top court and 18-3 overall while Martinache and Clemens are 8-1 in the second spot and 13-2 on the season. Gloria Alogo and Liisa Varul were all tied up with Gianna Mastro and Sofia Pizzoni at 4-4 on court three when the point was earned.
Chan put the second point on the board after winning her sixth top court match of the season, taking down Pizzoni 6-1, 6-0. Varul extended San Diego State’s lead with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Mastro in the sixth spot. Alogo then clinched the match for the Aztecs, defeating Lopicic 6-0, 6-2 on court two to complete the sweep.
The Aztecs led on the remaining three courts when the match was called. On court three, Clemens held a 6-1, 3-2 advantage over Dunbar while Teja Tirunelveli led Vukicevic 6-2, 5-3 on the fourth court and Vesa Gjinaj was ahead 6-1, 5-1 against Cormier in the fifth spot.
Next up, the team will host San Jose State (6-4, 0-1 MW) at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
