SAN DIEGO – San Diego State women’s tennis earned a top 25 win on the road on Saturday, taking down No. 19 San Diego 4-3 at the Hogan Tennis Center.
The No. 22 Aztecs improve to a 7-1 record and continue their six-match winning streak while the Toreros fall to 5-6 on the season.
San Diego State captured the crucial doubles point with wins on courts one and two. After San Diego’s Vilma Krebs Hyllested and Maria Shmakova earned a 6-1 victory over Gloria Alogo and Liisa Varul on court three, No. 38 Jo-Yee Chan and Vessa Turley evened the score with a 6-4 win against Ines Leon and Kristina Nordikyan in the top spot. Jayna Clemens and Ninon Martinache then clinched the point with a narrow 7-5 victory over Anni Moll and Hannah Read on the second court.
The Toreros tied things up off the bat in singles competition, taking court five where Varul was bested 6-0, 6-1 by Shmakova. They then took the lead after Martinache fell 6-1, 6-1 to Hyllested in the second spot.
Clemens put the second point on the board for the Aztecs, defeating Leon 6-1, 7-5 on the fourth court. Chan then reclaimed the lead for San Diego State, taking down Charlotte Keitel 6-2, 2-6, 6-2.
No. 112 Read won a must-win match for the Toreros. Alogo battled on court three, but came up short in a 7-5, 7-5 decision.
The match came down to the court six contest between Teja Tirunelveli and Gabby Gregg. After dropping the first set 4-6, Tirunelveli cruised to a 6-1 victory in the second. The third set was back-and-forth, but the Aztec ultimately pulled out a gritty 7-5 win to secure the top 25 victory for the Scarlet and Black.
