GREENVILLE, N.C. – San Diego State lacrosse fell in its first road contest of the 2026 campaign, tripped up 15-7 by East Carolina on Saturday morning.
The Aztecs fall to a 1-3 record while the Pirates improve to 3-2 on the season.
Keira Doyle-Odenbach and Barrett Doan led the Aztec offense, each tying their career high three goals. Doyle-Odenbach also had four draw controls, two ground balls and two caused turnovers. Maechtel found one scoring opportunity in addition to picking up one ground ball.
The Pirates were led by Katelyn Sclafani and Sarah Goodison with four goals apiece. Riley Matthiesen put away three, Maya Koebke scored two while Kalya Wilkes and CJ Kuiken each had one.
The Aztecs won the draw control battle with 13 compared to East Carolina’s 11, while also picking up 12 ground balls to ECU’s 11. The Aztecs also forced the Pirates to turn it over nine times, but it wasn’t enough to stifle the East Carolina offense, who got 29 shots off, 23 of which were on target.
Senior goalkeeper Caitlin Boughton played all 60 minutes in the cage, recording eight saves off 29 shots faced.
Jaime Behar, who played the entirety of the game between the pipes for the Pirates, made it hard for the Aztecs to find the back of the net. The senior grabbed 17 saves off 30 shots faced.
The Aztecs took an early 2-0 lead after Doyle-Odenbach and Maechtel scored in the first nine minutes. The Pirates got hot offensively, scoring nine unanswered goals into the second period. Doyle-Odenbach and Doan had back-to-back goals to bring the Aztecs back within six, followed by two more in the fourth period, but it wasn’t enough to get within reach of the Pirates, who ultimately won 15-7.
Next up, the Aztecs will head to Los Angeles to take on USC at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.
