Aztecs Come Up Short 4-0 in Tulsa

San Diego State men’s tennis completed its weekend on the road with an 11 a.m. contest against Tulsa at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on Sunday, where the Aztecs were blanked 4-0 by the Hurricane.

TULSA, Okla. – San Diego State men’s tennis completed its weekend on the road with an 11 a.m. contest against Tulsa at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on Sunday, where the Aztecs were blanked 4-0 by the Hurricane.

San Diego State falls to 1-7 overall while Tulsa improves to 7-5 on the season.

The Hurricane jumped out to a 1-0 lead after earning the doubles point on courts two and three. In the second spot, Imran Daniel Hazli and Aleksi Lofman fell 6-2 to Nikita Volonski and Timo Carlsson Seger. The point was captured on court three, where Eugenio Gonzalez Fitzmaurice and Lars Johann were bested 6-3 by Victor Tosetto and Gus Tettamble. The top court matchup between William Kleege/Denis Maijorov and Calum Jestin/Connor Doig was left unfinished, tied at 4-4.

In singles play, the Aztecs battled to a third set on courts two, three, four and six. The Hurricane added two more points on the board with victories in the first and fifth spots. On the top court, Hazli was tripped up 6-2, 6-2 by Volonski, while Maijorov came up short 7-5, 6-2 against Doig.

After falling 6-2 in the first set against Ruben Fernandez, Gonzalez Fitzmaurice rallied to a gritty 7-6 (7-5) win in the second set. The Aztec led 3-1 on court four when the match was called. In the second spot, Lofman earned a 6-4 first set victory over Seger, but dropped the second in a tough 7-6 (7-1) battle. The third set was left tied at 2-2. Kleege also took his match to three with a 6-4 win, followed by a 6-2 loss. The freshman was at a 5-0 deficit against Tosetto on court six when it was called.

Takeshi Taco clinched the match for Long Beach State on court three, where Finn Willman was bested 6-1, 6-7 (5-7), 6-2.   

Next up, San Diego State will return to the Aztec Tennis Center to take on Utah at 1 p.m. on Feb. 14.
